5 Day Self-Led Tour:
On arrival at your starting point Clonakilty for this 5 day, self-led tour, you will book into the Quality Hotel and enjoy their leisure centre, restaurant and bar facilities. Leave yourself enough time to stroll around the historic award-winning town of Clonakilty. You will be met by arrangement by Cycle West Cork and get fitted for your bicycles and receive all the safety equipment you require. Cycle West Cork will also provide maps and information, from recommended routes to sights and tourist attractions. This will allow you to cycle at your own pace and discover the delights of beautiful West Cork.
On leaving Clonakilty travel to Rathbarry, a delightful little village, before visiting Castlefreke and cycling through Owenahincha, where you’ll find a picturesque sandy beach. Take a short cycle from here to Rosscarbery before travelling on to Glandore, the riviera of the south-west. On route, stop at Drombeg Stone Circle and appreciate some of the ancient history of Ireland. After leaving Glandore, take in the coastal village of Union Hall and then ride along the coast to Castletownshend and enjoy tea in the castle. Leave Castletownshend and travel to Skibbereen. Skibbereen is the most southerly town in Ireland and was central to many historic events over the years. Pass through Skibbereen on the way to your base for the night which is Casey’s Hotel in Baltimore. It is well worth stopping at Lough Hyne on the way to Baltimore and see the only saltwater lake in Europe where you can take your time and enjoy the peace, beauty and tranquility of this rare experience. In Baltimore walk around this fishing port and get your picture taken at the Beacon, an iconic tourist site before enjoying a pint in one of the local hostelries.
After waving goodbye to Baltimore, we have organised your trip across the water to discover Cape Clear Island. Cape Clear is an Irish speaking community and is one of the highlights of any visit to West Cork. After exploring Cape Clear you will then get the ferry to Schull, another charming village where you can stop for lunch. After leaving Schull we recommend you travel along the coast and visit one of the finest beaches in Ireland – Barleycove. Continue on to Mizen Head the most southerly point in Ireland and get a chance to enjoy the visitor centre there. On leaving Mizen Head you can follow the coast through Durrus village to your base for the night which is the Maritime Hotel, Bantry, which has full leisure facilities. Take a walk around Bantry, visit Bantry House overlooking Bantry Bay and the historic square in which you can sit and relax and take in all that Bantry has to offer.
On leaving Bantry you will travel towards Skibbereen and visit Liss Ard House Estate. Liss Ard House has stunning award-winning gardens and it is worth taking your time to explore fully. There is also a freshwater lake if you require a swim. We recommend you have lunch in Skibbereen before touring around this historic town. We also recommend you visit Skibbereen Heritage Centre and visit the famine graveyard which is a great monument to all those who died during this period of history. We advise you view the many monuments from the Maid of Erin to Jeremiah O’Donovan Rossa. You will finish the day at your base for the night, the West Cork Hotel, which is a family-run business noted for their hospitality.
On the final day you will leave Skibbereen and travel through Leap and back to Rosscarbery, before following the coast to Galley Head and take in the stunning lighthouse. You will continue to Ardfield on the way to Inchydoney Island where there are more spectacular beaches and the famous Inchydoney Spa Hotel. You will continue the cycle to the market town of Clonakilty and back to where you started.
You will be met by arrangement on this final evening by representatives of Cycle West Cork and return your bikes and all equipment.
